THE longstanding relationship between Penang and Finland is deeply rooted in historical, educational, cultural, and economic ties.
In a move to further strengthen this connection, Datuk Seri Ar. Jong East Full has been appointed as the new Honorary Consul of the Republic of Finland in Penang.
Jong, who also serves as an active member of the Penang Port Commission’s Board of Directors, brings extensive experience to his new role.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted Jong’s strategic position in fostering mutual growth between Penang and Finland.
According to Chow, Jong’s appointment will open new doors for collaboration and enable both regions to promote their unique strengths.
“While Finland’s Honorary Consulate in Penang is not a new establishment, this appointment signifies a renewed impetus in the already warm relations between Penang and our Nordic friends,” Chow said during a special dinner at Ascott Gurney Penang in George Town today.
Chow also noted the recent establishment of a direct flight connection between Penang and Finland via Shanghai, a development that underscores the growing connectivity between the two regions.
“With Penang seeing an increasing influx of tourists and the addition of more direct flights to prominent international destinations, the ongoing expansion and upgrades at the Penang International Airport are both timely and essential.
“These improvements will support our state’s robust economy,” he said.
Chow also reaffirmed Penang’s commitment to capitalising on this momentum by enhancing connectivity and ensuring seamless travel for businesses, investors, and tourists alike.
Jong is also the state-level St. John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) vice-president and a lifetime member of the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) since 2022.
The ambassador of the Republic of Finland to Malaysia, Her Excellency Anne Vasara, and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran were also in attendance, further underscoring the importance of this partnership.
