THE Pusat Perkhidmatan Wanita (PPW), which was formed to assist victims of domestic and sexual violence on the Penang mainland, has made a remarkable impact.
State Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Chong Eng said the folk in Seberang Perai, particularly the victims of abuse, have benefitted from PPW.
“Over the past 14 years, they have provided free counselling and emotional support for over 7,800 women and children.
“Apart from counselling face-to-face and via telephone and online, PPW has raised awareness of domestic violence through programmes and talks at schools.
“In fact, many victims, including men, have also stepped forward to seek support from PPW,” she said at a press conference in Seberang Jaya today.
PPW is a smart partnership project between the state and Women Centre for Change (WCC).
It is actively working with the Penang government through the Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC).
Chong Eng said to date, about 245 people have been trained to assist the community.
“I hope more can come forward to help the community if the need arises. It is important for the community to stand together and assist the authorities,” she said.
She pointed out that the state was proud to partner with PPW to assist the community.
“I hope the Federal Government can allocate more resources to support counselling services and shelter to help victims of violence,” she said.
PPW manager and also registered counsellor Ooi Say Tee said she had come across a few violent cases involving minors as well.
“We strive our best to help the victims and provide emotional support throughout their ordeal.
“It’s not easy to overcome all the challenges alone. We are there to support the victims,” she said.
