PENANG has already flood mitigation plans in place to face the possible floods in the state during the current rainy season, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.
“The Penang government, through the state Natural Disaster Management Unit, has implemented a ‘flood protocol’ that will be activated when a flood occurs,” Chow told reporters when asked about the matter today after officiating the opening of the George Town Literary Festival 2024 at UAB Building in George Town.
He urged Penangites, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant, monitor official announcements, and be ready to move to temporary relief centres if necessary.
“As of now, the situation is under control, with no flood cases reported,” he added.
Chow also provided updates on the Sungai Pinang Flood Mitigation Project (RTB Sungai Pinang), which has commenced and is awaiting an official launch date from the Federal Government.
“However, keep in mind that RTB can only reduce or minimise the impact of floods, not prevent floods from happening,” he said.
