A SPECIAL programme titled “Creating an Inclusive Environment” was held at SMK Westlands today in conjunction with Autism Awareness Month. It aimed to promote inclusivity for individuals with disabilities within schools and the community.

Organised by Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara and supported by the state Education Department’s Special Education sector, the workshop brought together special education teachers from across the state for a day of empowerment and awareness.

The event drew praise for highlighting the dedication and commitment of educators to their special needs students.

Speaking at the launch, Tan Lean Kee, wife of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, emphasised the importance of fostering inclusive environments for special students.

“You are the true soul of the students. You play a pivotal role in their lives, nurturing and developing those with special needs,” she said.

Participants were introduced to a range of disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.

Tan lauded the workshop and underscored the importance of understanding sensory processing issues and the benefits of inclusive education for both students with special needs and their typically developing peers.

Citing studies, Tan highlighted that inclusive classrooms contribute to improved academic performance, enhanced social skills, and better mental health outcomes, while also helping to reduce bullying.

“Let us work together to build schools that are not just places of learning, but places where diversity is celebrated,” she urged.

In her closing remarks, Tan called for a collective commitment to recognising and valuing every child.

“Let us build a world where no child is left behind because every child deserves love, education, and the opportunity to fulfil their potential,” she said.

The programme marks a significant step in Penang’s ongoing efforts to champion inclusive education and support for special children.
