SCHOOLS, cultural institutions and art centres should play an exemplary role to promote arts and culture.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said dance and cultural activities can help to drive the growth of the creative economy in the state.

“Dance competition is crucial to cultivate students’ self-confidence and also build up their mental and emotional strengths.

“Besides promoting learning, it encourages creative thinking.

“I hope the Penang team can achieve glory in the competition and cherish the opportunities in the cultural platform,” he said in his speech during the inter-school dance competition at Dewan Sri Pinang last night.

A total of six teams from the primary and secondary schools would be selected respectively to participate in the upcoming National Dance Competition in Sabah next year.

Yeoh said this opportunity would help to make the state known for its vibrant cultural activities.

Also present were former Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai and Penang Cultural Dance Association president Koay Poy Teik.
