THE Penang government believes that the appointed consultants for the proposed Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project would carry out their job effectively to ensure that the project obtain the necessary approvals.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state has full trust in the consultants and that the Department of Environment (DoE) will do a good job in evaluating the Environment Management Plan (EMP).

“We will ensure that we meet all the requirements set by the DoE. Everything will proceed smoothly if the job is done professionally.

“We will abide by the timeline given and the project will not start until the requirements are complied with,” he told a press conference in Komtar today.

Chow was referring to a statement by Environment Minister Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man that the PSR project would not be given green light pending approval of EMP.

Tuan Ibrahim was quoted by a news portal as saying that work on the site could not begin pending the approval of the DoE because the EMP is one of the main conditions (out of 72 conditions) imposed under Environment Impact Assessment (EIA).

Chow pointed out that the statement by the minister was nothing out of the ordinary, as it has been stated in the past.
