Public servants battle it out at Spelling Bee

PUBLIC servants from various state and Federal departments and agencies gathered at Komtar today to put their spelling skills to the test during the 2024 Spelling Bee Competition, demonstrating their linguistic prowess and competitive spirit.

 

Organised by the state Corporate Communications and Innovation Unit, the event featured participants from a wide range of government sectors, all striving for the prestigious title of Spelling Bee Champion.

 

Forty two participants, including those from the Immigration Department, police, Veterinary Services Department, Penang Hospital, Penang Museum Board, and others, took part in the competition this year.

 

For the second consecutive year, Juhana Johan, representing the Land and Mines Office, showcased her exceptional skill and poise, successfully defending her Spelling Bee Champion title with a flawless performance.

“It feels incredible to win again. All the participants did really well.

 

“Preparation was intense, and I am grateful for the support from my colleagues,” Juhana expressed to Buletin Mutiara following the event.

 

The Spelling Bee was one of the key programmes featured in the 2024 Corporate and Innovation Week.

 

The first and second runners-up, both representing the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), were also acknowledged for their impressive performances.

 

Nancy Cheah Poh Gaik, who fell short of the finals last year, secured second place this time around.

“The competition brought together participants from various departments and agencies, all showcasing their spelling talents in a friendly yet fiercely contested environment.

 

“I am happy to have done better this year and to have made new friends from other departments and agencies,” Cheah said.

 

Third-place winner Dr Chin Wee Loon successfully defended his position from last year, demonstrating consistent excellence and maintaining a strong standing in the competition.

Reflecting on his experience, he emphasised: “Remaining calm and focused throughout the competition was crucial.”

 

Norman Sim from the Penang Chief Minister’s Office and Norfathin Adilah Nazri from the Penang Housing Board secured fourth and fifth places, respectively, showcasing impressive spelling abilities.

 

The judging panel praised all participants for their dedication and commitment to lifelong learning and skill development.

Penang State Deputy Secretary (Management) Datuk Abdul Kahar Abdullah presented cash prizes and trophies to the winners. The champion received RM700 and a trophy, while the second and third-place winners were awarded RM500 and RM300, along with their trophies. The fourth-place winner received RM150, and the fifth-place winner took home RM100.

All 42 participants were recognised for their efforts and dedication, receiving certificates of participation to mark their achievement.
