THE Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion in Jalan Utama is set to expand its services beyond cancer patients with the construction of a new RM10 million facility, expected to be completed by February next year.
Located near the existing home, the new facility will allow the organisation to provide compassionate care to homeless individuals and elderly residents in need of end-of-life support.
This milestone has been made possible through generous contributions from philanthropists, corporations, and the state government.
Pure Lotus chairman Venerable Lyan Shih expressed deep gratitude for the support received, emphasising the home’s ongoing efforts to raise funds for expansion and improvement.
“Deep in my heart, I thank our supporters, volunteers, and donors, who have been the pillars of our home.
“We would not be where we are today without their unwavering support,” she said during the groundbreaking ceremony.

She added that the new facility, located within walking distance of the current home, will accommodate 33 patients, ensuring that more individuals with life-limiting illnesses receive the care they need.
Lyan Shih also highlighted the resilience of cancer patients currently under the home’s care.
“Our environment promotes positivity, despite the challenges,” she said, while expressing appreciation to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow for officiating the groundbreaking ceremony.
As a show of support, Chow announced a RM100,000 contribution towards the new facility’s construction.
“With Penang’s aging population, the need for quality palliative care has never been more urgent.
“We must prioritise the well-being of the elderly and those suffering from chronic and terminal illnesses,” he said.
He reaffirmed the Penang government’s commitment to supporting the home and ensuring the welfare of vulnerable individuals.
He also acknowledged the importance of caring for the aging population, noting that the state has been formulating various policies on active aging to benefit the community.

“The state will continue to assist the home and provide the necessary support to ensure the well-being of those under its care,” he added.
Deputy Finance Minister and Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying also contributed RM50,000 to the building fund through the Finance Ministry.
“I urge everyone to lend their support, whether through donations, volunteering, or raising awareness.
“End-of-life care is not just a medical necessity – it is a moral responsibility,” she said.
She also praised the Pure Lotus team for their dedication and compassion in caring for those in need.
The event was also attended by Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, state Youth, Sports, and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi, state Social Development, Non-Religious, and Welfare Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim, and Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng.
