TO champion the noble cause of non-government organisation (NGO) Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion, the Penang government proudly commits a contribution of RM50,000 towards its building project.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow made this announcement at the NGO’s charity dinner at the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society.
“Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion has been a beacon of hope as the only ‘inpatient’ NGO hospice in Penang, offering free end-of-life care to cancer patients since its establishment in 2001.
“Its impact is immeasurable, transcending the boundaries of race and religion,” stated Chow during his address.
Highlighting the organisation’s commitment to supporting those in vulnerable stages, Chow expressed gratitude and emphasised the event’s purpose.
“Tonight, we celebrate compassion and we contribute to a cause that defines the very essence of humanity,” Chow said.
He disclosed that to accommodate more patients, the Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion is constructing a second building at No. 69, Jalan Utama, George Town, broadening its scope to include terminally ill non-cancer patients.
Expressing his commitment to expedite the project, Chow hoped that the consultant would follow up with the local and land authorities for necessary approvals so that construction could begin as scheduled by mid-2024.
The charity dinner successfully raised RM600,000, with an additional RM100,000 expected from a calligraphy auction, bringing the total to RM700,000.
Chow acknowledged the invaluable support of NGOs like Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion, emphasising their role in creating a conducive environment for the well-being of every Penangite.
“Every life is precious, and every individual facing a terminal illness deserves a shelter where they can find comfort.
“Penang is known for its resilience, generosity, and compassion,” praised Chow, commending Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion for its unwavering dedication to the community.
Meanwhile, Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion founder Venerable Lyan Shih, thanked the state government for its continuous support.
Also present was Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng.
