UNTIL women come forward to champion the agenda of empowerment, the goal of achieving gender equality will not be attained, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow shared this when he attended the ‘Purple Walk: Women Taking The Lead,’ held in conjunction with the International Women’s Day 2025. The programme was organised by Padang Kota Women and Family Development Committee (JPWK Padang Kota).

“Women’s Day has been observed for half a century ago, while the women’s empowerment movement began over a hundred years ago. Despite significant progress, there is still much more to achieve.

“This walk highlights women’s quest for gender equality, justice, rights, and empowerment.

“It is a call to action, urging the government and society to respond and help Malaysia move forward in empowering women.

“I hope that women in Malaysia, and particularly in Penang, will continue to stand firm, be visible, and remain steadfast in their advocacy for gender equality,” he added.

Chow reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to defending women’s rights, noting that Penang was the first state in the country to establish the Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC).

“PWDC spearheads, implements, and develops policies related to women’s affairs, with various women empowerment activities taking place at the constituency and community levels. These efforts will continue.

“I believe the rest of the country is watching our work,” he added.

PWDC chief executive officer Datuk Ong Bee Leng emphasised that much work remains in closing the gender gap.

“We are still far behind and a lot of work needs to be done. I would like to thank CM Chow for his tremendous support in advancing women’s empowerment and policies related to it,” Ong said.

This year’s IWD theme, ‘Accelerate Action,’ calls for greater urgency in achieving gender equality. IWD was observed worldwide yesterday.

Throughout March, various exciting activities will be organised for the people of Penang aiming to both empower women and strengthen the spirit of togetherness.

Also present were Padang Kota JPWK chairperson Datin Yeoh Phaik Suan.
