THE contribution by frontliners needs to be acknowledged by the Federal Government, Penang executive council member Jagdeep Singh Deo said.
Jagdeep, who is the state Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Commitee chairman, said while Penang welcomed the assistance from the Federal Government to combat Covid-19, the Government could have done more to assist the health sector.
“The medical experts have given their views that the entire Covid-19 support from the 2021 Budget was too small.
“There was also no mention of more permanent posts for frontliners. They should be recognised,” Jagdeep told a press conference today while quoting an article from an English daily.
He questioned the priorities taken by the Federal Government.
“The priorities should be ways to break the chain of infection.
“Our frontliners are Covid-19 fatigue now,” he said.
Jagdeep said Malaysia recorded an all-time high of 1,755 Covid-19 cases in a day on Nov 6.
“The number of cases are increasing daily. Are we going to hit 2,000 (daily) cases or beyond?
“The Federal Government has to give utmost attention to fight against Covid-19. Do not take it lightly,” he said.
Jagdeep added that the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) had conducted about 1.5 million inspections so far to ensure that the standard operating procedures are complied with.
