A DEVELOPER planning to construct dormitories for foreign workers in Teluk Kumbar has been urged to withdraw its application for planning permission.

Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz has called on the company to follow the example of a previous developer who pulled out from the project.

During a session of the Penang Legislative Assembly on May 29, Penang Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye announced that the previous company had withdrawn its application for planning permission on May 9.

H’ng added that the application for the issuance of the planning permission certificate by the company currently interested in the hostel project is still pending.

Azrul said he has sent a letter to the company, requesting the developer to change its mind.

“I am also prepared to give my full support if the company decides not to proceed with the project and instead focuses on building another project, such as a pump station or affordable homes at the current site, which would benefit the local community.

“If the company decides to sell the land, we will try our best to secure funding from the state or Federal governments to buy the land and develop projects that benefit the people of Teluk Kumbar,” Azrul said at a press conference at the Penang Legislative Assembly building today.
