THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has announced a new initiative to develop more neighbourhood parks in residential areas. This plan aims to enhance the quality of life for Penangites by providing more green spaces for recreation and social interaction.

With an allocation of RM5.2 million for the current year, MBPP aims to develop and upgrade neighbourhood parks, providing residents with more recreational spaces.

Some of the residents around Penang island shared their opinions on this initiative.

Siti Sarah Suhardi, 29, and Shamil Shazwan Abu Bakar, 25, highlighted the importance of planned development to accommodate Malaysia’s growing population.

“I think this initiative can help the community to have comfortable activities in the morning and evening like exercising or bringing their children to the park,” said Sarah.

“At the same time, it can also further community values and economic stability by bringing together people from various backgrounds,” added Shamil.

Asiah K, 30, a resident of Jelutong, pointed out the lack of facilities and recreation parks in her neighbourhood.

“For me, it’s a good idea that MBPP wants to develop more neighbourhood parks because in my area there’s only Bukit Dumbar and Areca Park.

“This is important, as it improves both our physical and emotional well-being. My community is full of working people who need places to unwind, therefore, I suggest adding more parks that offer essential spots for a workout,” said Asiah.

Muhammad Muizzuddin Syahiran Mohd Basri, 29, is optimistic that the development of neighbourhood parks will contribute to residents’ improved physical and emotional well-being.

“Running and cycling are two forms of physical activity that parks provide, both of which are beneficial to one’s physical well-being.

“On the other hand, the tranquility and beauty of nature can benefit mental health by lowering stress and elevating mood.

“Thank you MBPP for your dedication and commitment to making Penang a greener, healthier, and friendlier place for all,” Syahiran concluded.

Nurul Sofia Mohd Sukeri, 23, expressed concern about safety around the neighbourhood park.

“It is crucial to make sure that these parks have enough lights and security monitoring so that all visitors are safe.

“To ensure that the parks stay in excellent shape, further attention must be paid to the issues of cleanliness and continuing maintenance,” Nurul Sofia said.

Continued community input and engagement will be essential as MBPP advances this strategy to guarantee that the new parks satisfy the requirements and expectations of Penang’s varied population.
