THE Penang government is committed to assisting residents of Kampung Wellesley in Sungai Bakap with their applications for individual land grants.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that this issue was discussed at a recent state executive council (exco) meeting.

“During my visit to Kampung Wellesley before the Sungai Bakap nomination day, I was informed about the grant issues faced by the residents.

“I subsequently brought this matter to the exco meeting, and it is currently being further reviewed by the state Land and Mines Office,” Chow said.

Chow assured residents that the government would do its utmost to provide assistance in their applications for individual grants.

He mentioned that a previous application by residents had been rejected because it did not meet all the required conditions.

“One of the conditions under the Land Act is that signatures from the respective owners or their heirs are necessary before applying for individual grants.

“The 106 lots here hold a single grant under the name of Kampung Wellesley Berhad, and the residents do not have individual grants,” Chow explained.

“We hope that the residents will come together and provide their signatures, as 100% agreement is required,” he added.

Chow expressed confidence that by following proper procedures, the issue could be resolved, and the lot owners would obtain their individual grants.

He also noted that the matter would be raised again at the upcoming exco meeting until an effective solution is found.

State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, state Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, and Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin were also present during the engagement session.
