THE emergence of young artists and foreign artists is helping Penang to revive its former glory in visual arts.”With the emergence of young artists and foreign artists who have made this island (Penang) as their base of operation, we can see a resurgence of art in Penang,” said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at the launch of Peter Liew Art Gallery in Cantonment Road this afternoon.

“I am glad that Penang has attracted Peter Liew to move his base here.

“Artists like Peter Liew and many more like him had enlivened the art scene in Penang.

“Events such as the George Town Festival, the George Town Literary Festival as well as the proposed Penang Art District will help generate public interest in art through exposure and informal education,” added Chow.

According to Chow, Liew is setting up his gallery and an international art village called ‘PLAVI’ in Balik Pulau.

“Galleries and art villages are integral parts of the art ecosystem. As such, it is encouraging that Peter Liew is initiating the Peter Liew Art Gallery and an international art village in Balik Pulau,” he said.

Chow also stated that Penang was on track to regain its former seat as an art and cultural hub that would attract even more artists across the globe.
