ROADS leading to the bustling Weld Quay will be fully closed from 5pm on Feb 5 to 4am on Feb 6 to facilitate the grand Jade Emperor’s birthday celebration.

The annual event, held in front of Chew Jetty, is expected to attract a crowd of over 30,000 people.

Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng announced that the closures will affect the stretch from Fushan Sandalwood to the Shell petrol kiosk, as well as sections at Gat Lebuh Acheh and Gat Lebuh Armenian.

“Residents living in the affected areas will be issued special passes to access their homes,” Wong said.

“In fact, from 10am on Feb 5, the roads will be partially closed to allow for stage setup, with RELA personnel deployed to manage traffic flow during the event.

“We hope the public will understand and plan their journeys accordingly,” he said during a brief media conference at Weld Quay today.

To ensure cleanliness and convenience, bins will be placed around the event area.

Wong also expressed gratitude to sponsors, including Beyond Insights for contributing RM10,000, Mixue for providing 10,000 cash coupons, and Halo Optical for distributing 3,000 coupons.

To boost attendance, the event’s promotional advertisements have been displayed at five key bus stops across Penang island: Kelawai, Tanjong Tokong, Light Street, Weld Quay, and Komtar.

Joining the media conference were Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Benji Ang, George Town World Heritage Incorporated Communications and Collaboration manager Vick Quah, and Brandway Event founder Richard Lim.
