Roadmap to address plastic pollution to be ready soon, says MBSP mayor

THE Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) is preparing a special roadmap to reduce the usage of single-use plastics on the mainland.

MBSP mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud said with the roadmap, the city council would be able to address the plastic pollution more effectively.

“Through the roadmap, we want to establish a strict policy to ensure factories in Seberang Perai to reuse the plastic that they have used for their products and recycle it into other purposes.

“We will monitor them closely through this roadmap.

“This is the best approach compared to the conventional methods of take, make and dispose.

“The roadmap also aimed to raise awareness among the public to take good care of the environment during this pandemic period, especially in reducing the usage of single-use plastics.

“In short, our roadmap is aligned with the ‘No single-use plastic’ initiatives carried out by the Penang government. We want to protect our environment and ecosystem and to create a healthy environment for the community especially on the mainland.

“More details will be announced soon once the roadmap is completed,” Rozali told reporters after the full council meeting at the MBSP headquarters building in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam today.

On a separate matter, Rozali also announced that ratepayers in Seberang Perai could stand a chance to win 10 cash prizes totalling RM26,000 when they pay their assessment tax for the year 2022 and arrears via online, appointed collection agencies or kiosks.

“All premises owners on the mainland would be entitled to the lucky draw if they settle their payment from Dec 1, 2021 to Feb 28, 2022.

“The 10 cash prizes are RM10,000 (first place), RM5,000 (second place), RM3,000 (third place), RM2,000 (fourth place) and RM1,000 (fifth place).

“And from the sixth place until 10th place, the price is RM1,000 each.

“Those who pay their assessment at the physical counter are automatically opted out from joining the draw.

“Thus, I would like to urge all premises’ owners to make payments and settle their arrears within the stipulated time to stand a chance of winning the lucky draw prizes,” he added.

Rozali said MBSP would likely announce the lucky draw winners in March next year.
