IN just 24 hours, three generations of a four-decade-old mee sotong business, entered the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for the most mee sotong giveaways, totalling up to 10,200 plates of noodles to the public.
Seeni Mee Sotong, led by its founder, Sheikh Abidin AKM Mustapha, 80, alongside his son, Seeni Mohd Sheikh Abidin, 47, and grandson Syed Muhammad Hafiz Seeni Mohd, 24, achieved their target of 10,000 plates at about 3.45pm today.
This was a collaborative effort with the Young Muslim Sports Club (YMSC), led by its president Munawer Sadiq.
In a brief certificate (MBOR) handover ceremony earlier, Munawer in his speech, thanked all business partners, especially those from the food and beverage industry, for making this bold attempt a reality.
“The field in Esplanade was like a feast for the public since last night as they enjoyed the mee Sotong with their loved ones.
“It would not have been possible without our friends in the related industry, and of course, for the three amazing individuals from Seeni Mee Sotong, for leading the way towards attaining the MBOR status.
“Thank you also to the Penang government and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) for regularly supporting our initiatives. Today’s achievement will stand very close to our hearts,” he said during the certificate handover ceremony at Esplanade in George Town today.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, as the guest of honour, applauded this feat by Seeni Mee Sotong and the YMSC, while expressing hopes for other organisations to follow suit.
“We hope other organisations will also be motivated by this attempt to produce something remarkable and worthy of entering the MBOR.
“Hats off to all the participating sponsors and individuals for playing a role in the success of this event today,” Chow said in his speech.
Meanwhile, Chow, who is also Padang Kota assemblyman, praised the YMSC, highlighting their history of making significant societal impacts.
He referred to the country’s longest Jalur Gemilang mural along the Jalan Tanjung Tokong-Jalan Tanjung Bungah, which was painted by the YMSC about 10 years ago.
That was their first entry into the MBOR, making this mee sotong event their second in a decade.
Chow also proudly mentioned that Penang approximately makes the MBOR 10 to 20 times a year.
“One that we recently completed was when we gained the title (MBOR) for planting 1.3 million trees in one day throughout the state, spearheaded by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak,” he added.
Also present during the event earlier was MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.
