THE project developer, Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), is currently considering a few locations for the groundbreaking ceremony of Penang’s highly anticipated Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.
State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the much-awaited groundbreaking event is scheduled to take place at the end of this year.
“MRT Corp is in the process of identifying a suitable site to initiate the construction works. They are currently finalising various factors, including logistical concerns and other relevant considerations.
“Construction works can begin simultaneously at a few places, which is up to the project developer to decide,” he said at the sidelines of a media conference in Komtar after being asked by a reporter about the updates of the project.
He added that he had recently met with MRT Corp, and discussions with the SRS Consortium are in their final stages, with the project expected to move forward once all details are settled.
Regarding the sinkhole incident in Taman Seri Nibong, which led to a road closure last week, Zairil explained that repairs are still underway.
“A thorough monitoring process was conducted following the sinkhole, which was caused by a leak in an underground pipe belonging to Indah Water Konsortium (IWK). Maintenance works are ongoing, and we are awaiting updates. We expect the sinkhole to be fully repaired soon,” he said.
