THE Penang government has given a six-month moratorium to farmers to legalise their agriculture activities on slopes.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said their applications must be submitted to the Penang State Department of Agriculture and the local government before or on 30 June 2022.

“As of March 9, 2022, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has received a total of seven applications pertaining to the agricultural activities on hilly areas.

“These are the farmers who carry out permanent agricultural activities involving durian, rambutan, jack fruit and others.

“The farmers can contact the MBPP’s Engineering Department for more information should they need any assistance,” he added.

Meanwhile, Jagdeep also said the ‘Safety Guidelines For Agriculture Activities On Slopes 2021’ was approved at the State Planning Committee Meeting on Dec 8 last year.

Jagdeep said the latest safety guidelines would help to enhance the overall safety aspect and are in tandem with the ‘Penang Safety Guideline For Hill Site Development 2nd Edition 2020’.
