SJKC Shih Chung Pusat, one of the oldest schools in Penang, celebrated its annual Children’s Day with joy and festivities today at its Love Lane premises in George Town.
Representing Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Padang Kota Service Centre director Ewe Chee Way praised school principal Low Siau Chew and her dedicated staff members for their efforts in organising the event. The school, established in 1929 and located in Padang Kota, serves 63 pupils and falls within Chow’s constituency.
“We appreciate the dedication of the headmistress, teachers, the school board of directors, Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), and well-wishers for ensuring the school continues to grow,” Ewe said.
“Education is not just the responsibility of the school but also the parents and community. Recognising its importance, the Penang government has systematically supported schools for the past 16 years, providing financial aid for infrastructure and resources to create a conducive learning environment for our children.”
Also present at the celebration were Datuk Seri Dr Kelvin Kiew Kwong Sen, chairman of the school’s board of directors; Wong Chiew Lee, chairperson of MPKK Lebuh Chulia; Low Siau Chew, principal of SJKC Shih Chung Pusat; and Teh Chee Keong, PIBG chairman.
The event was a nostalgic journey for Kiew, who recalled celebrating Children’s Day at the school as a Standard One pupil 71 years ago. His grandfather and father were both teachers at SJKC Shih Chung.
Reflecting on the school’s heritage, Kiew expressed gratitude for the preservation of its traditions. He also suggested that the school consider broadening the composition of its Hakka-only board to include members from other dialect groups, as Han Chiang has done in moving beyond only Teochew representation.
Speaking at a section of the school named after his father, Chew Heng Huan, who taught at the school for 37 years, Kiew played an instrumental role in facilitating recent major renovations to the school.
In her speech, Wong praised the school for continuing the Children’s Day celebration and expressed gratitude to the state government and Chief Minister Chow for their ongoing support.
Low, the principal, shared her excitement about the annual event, saying that Children’s Day is eagerly anticipated by the students each year.
“Celebrating Children’s Day is our way of showing love and care for our children. Today, we see each student’s happy, excited smile,” she said.
“As parents, teachers, and community members, we all share the responsibility to provide quality education and growth opportunities, ensuring a brighter future for our children.”
Low added: “Every smile, every achievement, and every bit of progress from the students is a joy to see. I hope they treasure today’s happiness, continue working hard, develop their interests, and pursue their dreams courageously.”
She expressed her gratitude to the Padang Kota Service Centre, Chow, MPKK Lebuh Chulia, other supporters and sponsors for their contributions to the celebration.
In addition to the students’ lively performances, which included a sport-stacking demonstration, a clown entertained attendees and students with his balloon artistry, adding to the day’s festive atmosphere.
