SOME 800 students at SJK(T) Mak Mandin in Butterworth will now benefit from a newly constructed multipurpose court within the school compound.
The new facility provided space for sports activities such as hockey, basketball, and volleyball, offering students more opportunities to engage in physical education and extracurricular events.
At the court’s opening ceremony today, Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, who heads the Penang Tamil Schools Special Committee, expressed pride in the school’s achievement in constructing the multipurpose court.
“After attending the opening ceremony today, the thought of further upgrading the multipurpose court came to mind.
“Together with my deputy chairman, YB Kelvin Kumaran (Bagan Dalam state assemblyman), we aim to construct a roof over the court to make it more convenient for the students to use it at any time.
“We intend to support the project with next year’s allocation for Tamil schools,” Sundarajoo said.
Sundarajoo, who is also the state executive councillor, mentioned that once the court is equipped with a roof, it could also be rented out for functions, generating additional income for the school.
“SJKT Mak Mandin is one of the largest Tamil schools in Penang, with a significant number of students.
“By enhancing its facilities, we can accommodate more students and provide a better environment for their education.
“Let us empower our Tamil community through unity and education in our schools. We must also preserve the Tamil language, as it is the identity of our community,” said Sundarajoo, who is also the Perai assemblyman.
Meanwhile, Kumaran, in charge of the infrastructure portfolio under the Penang Tamil Schools Special Committee, highlighted the committee’s commitment to improving school facilities in order to enhance students’ educational experience and support sports activities.
The headmaster of SJKT Mak Mandin, N. Gunasekaran, expressed his gratitude to the state government for its financial assistance in building the multipurpose court.
It is learned the state government has allocated a total of RM100,000 to the school for various infrastructure projects, with RM70,000 used for the court’s construction and the balance for other purposes.
Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairman T. Poovaneswaran shared that the total cost for the construction of the new court was RM139,000.
According to Poovaneswaran, RM30,000 was raised during the school’s fundraising event, while RM46,000 was contributed by former student Datuk Seri V. Shanmuganathan.
These efforts, combined with the state government’s allocation, helped cover the total construction cost of the new court.
Also present at the event were Bagan Jermal assemblyman Chee Yee Keen, along with several other dignitaries, teachers, students, and well-wishers.
