THE completion of a slope restoration project at Jalan Tun Sardon in the southwest district on Penang island shows that the state government is concerned with the infrastructure needs of Penangites.

State Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the state is committed to the well-being of the people, particularly those in Balik Pulau.

“The slope in Jalan Tun Sardon was repaired following a landslide. The state had approved RM10 million allocation for such purposes last year.

The restoration work in progress following a landslide.

“However, the contractor’s bid for the project was RM7,455,500 while the total cost of the completed project was RM6.83 million, resulting in a saving of RM3.17 million.

“An open tender was called on Feb 21 last year and Nilai Cekal Sdn Bhd was appointed to carry out the restoration.

“They used soil nailing technique as a construction remedial measure to stabilise the areas. It was done by inserting steel into the soil.

“The works were completed on March 9 this year before the movement control order (MCO) was imposed on March 18.

“On top of that, the project was completed 16 days ahead of the schedule, thanks to the cooperation between the contractor and Public Works Department (PWD),” he said.

Zairil added that works on three more slopes in Jalan Jeep, Bukit Gambir and another in the southwest district are ongoing.
