THE replacement of the two leaking 1,200mm control valves at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (Sungai Dua WTP) is progressing smoothly as planned.
Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief executive officer K. Pathmanathan said the replacement works commenced as scheduled immediately after PBAPP temporarily shut down the Sungai Dua WTP to facilitate the urgent waterworks projects.
“As of 12pm today, we have achieved 60% progress with one of the valves and 30% with the second valve,” Pathmanathan told a press conference at Sungai Dua WTP today.
Pathmanathan also informed that currently PBAPP emergency response team (ERT) is dealing with an issue at Sungai Perai.
“When PBAPP shut down the water supply this morning, the drop in water pressure dislodged the clamp that we installed on a leaking section of the 1.35m underwater pipe last December.
“Nevertheless, this problem was anticipated. PBAPP has already deployed a team of 16 commercial divers to install a more secure clamp over a larger section of the leaking pipeline.
“They are at work on-site and the current work progress at Sungai Perai is now at 50%. We will provide updates on Sungai Perai via our Facebook page and the mass media as well.
“Rest assured, PBAPP’s target has not changed. We are committed to completing all works as scheduled, by 6am tomorrow morning, including emergency work at Sungai Perai.
“PBAPP will work through the night and the early hours of the morning as necessary. Let us get the jobs done right and on time,” he said.
