A PILOT project involving the installation of solar panels along the unique Harapan Bridge near Queensbay Mall area in Bayan Lepas, is coming up soon.

The initiative will be undertaken by Penang Island City Council (MBPP) which plans to roll out the solar energy as part of its green agenda.

MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said this effort was meant to improve the energy efficiency along the pedestrians and cyclists lane.

Yew speaking to reporters on the solar energy initiative.

He said the solar panels would be installed in two phases under the council’s initiative to reduce carbon emissions.

“For the first phase, it will be spread out along the 200m lane while the second phase will cover another 400m.

“This will definitely help to harvest the energy and ensure a comfortable ride for the cyclists.

“It also provides shade to the pedestrians and cyclists as well under the hot sun,” he told a press conference after attending renewable energy talks at Penang Institute in Jalan Brown on July 25.

Also present was state Public Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.

In the speech, Zairil said this was clearly a good initiative in line with the green agenda.

“In fact, Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) also started the effort by installing solar panels at rooftops of government offices and public markets,” he said, adding that it would reduce the carbon footprint.

Penang is turning to solar energy as part of its commitment towards green environment.

The Chowrasta Market was the latest market in the country to be green building index (GBI) certified. The walkways along the market would have solar panels installed.
