HAVE you ever had any near-miss experiences on the road? Are our roads safe for pedestrians?
Have you seen rubbish being thrown haphazardly although there were rubbish bins nearby?
The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has embarked on a civic consciousness campaign to educate the public on road safety and other social issues.
Councillor Tan Hooi Peng said the council had invested a lot of time, money and effort to combat illegal dumping, vandalism, illegal parking, and to make the city safer for pedestrians.
“We realise that many of these issues stemmed from human behaviour. So, we organise this campaign to advocate behavioural change.
“Since last week, we have installed creative advertisement panels at five bus stops in Pulau Tikus to raise public awareness. We hope to instal more advertisement panels in other locations soon.
“The five bus stops are in Burma Road, Kelawai Road, Macalister Road and Pangkor Road.
“We have also spoken to cinema operators to promote the civic consciousness campaign.
“We use public spaces for a good cause, to create a more civic-conscious society,” Tan said.
Tan, who is also the council’s Public Awareness sub-committee chairman, thanked Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee for being the first state elected representative to support and adopt the campaign.
She said the council was also using Instagram promote the campaign and to reach out to the community.
A press conference was held in Kelawai Road today to explain the details of the campaign. Also present was Lee.
