CHAP Goh Meh, a traditional celebration, has evolved into a signature event for Penang, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
“Chap Goh Meh signifies the end of the Chinese New Year celebration, which is a significant event, especially for the Tionghua community.
“It is a unique tradition with elements of Baba Nyonya heritage.
“Chap Goh Meh has now become our signature event,” Chow said after taking part in the orange-tossing ceremony at the Esplanade today.
While retaining its traditional roots, Chap Goh Meh has incorporated a modern touch.
Chow expressed optimism that Wong Hon Wai, the state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman, will continue to enhance events related to the celebration, infusing them with deeper meaning.
“This is always a grand celebration in Penang attracting locals and visitors from other states,” he added.
Chap Goh Meh, affectionately known as the Chinese Valentine’s Day, is always a colourful spectacle enjoyed by both locals and tourists as well.
Thousands of visitors enthusiastically participated in the state level-Chap Goh Meh Festival which started around 5pm in the evening and featured a variety of programmes, including cultural performances and food stalls.
The festival featured a float parade (Dondang Sayang), with several members of the Baba Nyonya community adorned in traditional attire.
To add to the festive ambience, a huge dragon sculpture has been installed at the Esplanade field, providing festive-goers with the perfect backdrop for capturing memorable pictures.
