THE signature Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta kicked off in style, attracting thousands of visitors to Polo Ground.
The hot air balloons were from countries around the world such as United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Taiwan, and Japan.
State Tourism Development, Heritage, Culture and Arts Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said that the fiesta marked the start of the Experience Penang Year 2020 (EPY 2020).
“The Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, which is held for the sixth time, is one of the programmes listed in the EPY 2020 calendar.
“We bring in 15 hot air balloons of various shapes and designs yearly,” Yeoh said during his speech at the launch of the fiesta yesterday (Feb 1).
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was present, stressed the need for the state to diversify its tourism products.
“Penang has to diversify its tourism products in view of the increase in the number of tourists; both local and international.
“The Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta has been included in the state’s tourism calendar since 2015.
“I trust that the organiser has been working hard to enhance the fiesta over the years,” Chow said.
Penang Governor Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas was given the honour to launch the fiesta together with the other dignitaries present.
Some visitors had a jolly good time at the ‘night glow’ show, which featured 10 lighted up balloons and music.
Those present did not miss the exciting fireworks display towards the end of the ‘night glow’ show.
Visitors can still enjoy the fiesta today (Feb 2) at the Polo Ground from 7am to 9pm.
