THERE is no denying that sports can indeed strengthen the relationship among the races, regardless of one’s religious belief.

Ayer Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng Soon Siang said sports is a unique element that can unite the society.

“Through sports, we can set aside our differences and work together to achieve our goals.

“At the same time, we can also shape the society especially by encouraging the younger generation to be active in sports for a healthy lifestyle,” Ng told reporters after a prize-giving ceremony at a futsal tournament for the Joseph Ng Cup at Taman Kejiranan Lebuh Padang Tembak in Ayer Itam today.

Speaking about the programme, Ng congratulated the Village Community Management Council (MPKK) of Kampung Pisang for organising the competition and hoped that such programme would be continued in the future.

“This is a good initiative by the organiser as we can foster unity through sports, in terms of fellowship and sportsmanship.”

The futsal competition got off to a great start today with 84 players from six secondary schools in Ayer Itam taking part. They were divided into 12 teams.

The schools were Chung Ling High School, Heng Ee High School, Chung Hwa High School, SMK Georgetown, Methodist Boys School and Han Chiang High School.

During the futsal competition, Georgetown Team B emerged as the champions with MBS Cougar finishing second and Georgetown Team A third.

The top three teams won RM600, RM400 and RM200 each respectively besides trophies.
