TWO sports programmes – Chess for All 2020 and Mini Carnival Tennis Penang 2020 – will be the first to be promoted this year by the state government together with the state Youth and Sports Council.

Soon Lip Chee, the state executive councillor for Youth and Sports, said they would continue with the ‘Sports for All’ programme after it received overwhelming response last year.

“The chess programme will be held at Level 3, Prangin Mall, on Jan 11 and 12 at 10am.

“This year, a chess clinic will be held in conjunction with the competition. The free clinic will accommodate 100 participants for the two days, with 50 participants each for Saturday and Sunday,” Soon told a press conference at Komtar on Jan 2.

Also present were Batu Uban assemblyman A. Kumaresan, Penang State Sports Council administrative officer Harry Chai Heng Hua, Penang Chess Association president See Swee Sie, its deputy president Tan Eng Seong, Penang Lawn Tennis president Hang Kok Long and its secretary Paul Lim.

For further information on the chess participation, call Tan at 012-2989517.

For tennis, Soon said the mini carnival championships would be held at Universiti Sains Malaysia courts on Jan 18 and 19 from 8am.

He added that a clinic free of charge for children below 12 years old and schoolteachers would be conducted apart from the tennis competition. The clinic is limited to only 250 participants.

“Boys and girls between seven and 12 years old will be playing with smaller racquets and softer balls in a mini tennis court. The programme is an important component of the overall development of the players,” Soon said.
