THE Penang Jawi Peranakan Heritage Society has been hosting iftar gatherings every week during Ramadan for the visually impaired residents of St Nicholas Home, made possible through generous contributions from its members.
Chef Nurilkarim Razha, president of the society and executive chef of Jawi House, has teamed up with Rohani Hussaini, trustee of Nasyiatul Aysiah Home, to bring in the flavours of Ramadan to about 60 residents at St Nicholas, including orphans from Nasyiatul Aysiah.
The team received additional support from single mothers of Persatuan Ibu Tunggal.

On March 22, several members of the society joined about 32 residents at St Nicholas for the iftar. The society catered extra meals from Shahabe Catering and provided additional treats, including roti surai, kuih muih, bubur lambuk, curry puffs and salad.
The residents were overjoyed to receive duit raya, with Nurilkarim presenting it to the boys and men, and Prof Emerita Dato Seri Wazir Jahan distributing it to the young girls and women. There was a general feeling of happiness all around, which was reassuring.

On March 23, the iftar gathering was extended to about 40 children and three staff members of the Salvation Army, with Jawi House sponsoring the meal at Kemboja.
Chef Nurilkarim curated a different menu for each occasion, ensuring a delightful culinary experience.
The society champions the principles of diversity, equality and inclusivity, fostering unity across all ethnicities, cultures and faiths in alignment with the Madani philosophy of civic engagement, goodwill and harmony.
