AS Penang inches closer to becoming an ageing state, the focus on fostering a healthier, more purposeful lifestyle among its senior citizens has never been more important.

State executive councillor Lim Siew Khim, who leads the Social Development, Welfare, and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs portfolio, is championing this cause with passion.

During a heartwarming Chinese New Year (CNY) goodies distribution event held at the Penang2030 centre in Sungai Pinang on Jan 18, Lim highlighted the importance of ageing gracefully, both physically and mentally.

She encouraged Penang’s senior citizens to embrace the state’s various health and wellness initiatives while taking personal steps to stay active.

“Penang is blessed with an abundance of parks across its neighbourhoods.

“I urge everyone to take full advantage of these spaces to stay fit and maintain a vibrant lifestyle.

“This Chinese New Year, I hope all of you will enjoy a joyful celebration with your loved ones.

“As we welcome 2025, let us live with greater purpose and meaning,” Lim said in her speech.

The event saw 250 residents receiving festive goodie bags filled with dry food items and cooking essentials, each valued at RM40.

To make the occasion even brighter, each recipient was also handed an RM50 ang pow packet, spreading cheer and financial support during the festive season.

This initiative not only reflects Penang’s commitment to its ageing community but also fosters a spirit of love and togetherness and essential values of the Chinese New Year celebration.
