St. Nicholas’ Home, a non-profit charitable organisation dedicated to supporting the blind and visually impaired community, is appealing for public donations to cover its substantial monthly operating costs of RM250,000.

The home provides vital services to individuals of all religions, races, and backgrounds.

St Nicholas’ Home general manager Carmen Chew Kah Mun emphasised the importance of community contributions.

“This is because the home relies heavily on donations to continue its work. Our operation cost is very high, so we depend a lot on donations from the public,” she explained to Buletin Mutiara today.

She mentioned that St. Nicholas’ Home employs 51 staff members, including 30 teachers who provide specialised education and care for children.

“With small class sizes of just three to four students per teacher, the home ensures each child receives the extra attention they need.

“We educate them until they turn 18, equipping them with skills such as pastry-making, handicrafts, massage therapy, and IT courses.

“These skills help them become self-sustainable and generate their own income,” said Chew.

In addition to children, Chew said the home also cares for elderly individuals and adults, providing a safe and nurturing environment for its residents.

She added that as the holiday season approaches, St. Nicholas’ Home hopes to raise funds through a series of Christmas programmes.

“We aim to organise various programmes this Christmas to help us meet our financial needs,” Chew said.

The public is encouraged to contribute generously to ensure the home can continue its invaluable mission of empowering the visually impaired and fostering their independence.
