THE Penang government is awaiting a report from State Secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus regarding complaints of a ‘cross’ sign on an apartment block in Jelutong.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said this after officiating the “Evolve Final Year Exhibition 2019” by KDU students at Jetty 35, Weld Quay today.
“We’ve not received any explanation from the developer on why the lights are in such a manner. I believe the project is not yet completed and has not obtained the CCC (Certificate of Compliance and Certification),” Chow said.
He was responding to a reporter’s question on a call by the state Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor yesterday, asking the state government to investigate the matter.
A newspaper report said the ‘cross’ sign turned out to be only a series of lights and when lit appeared like a cross.
Chow said the contractor could be in the process of testing out their facilities, including the lights. While showing the image he received on his handphone to the press, Chow said the sign could also be interpreted as the Chinese character for surname ‘Ong’.
“But when many lights were turned on, we see a normal image. I believe the building is not a church but a residential apartment. We should have understanding and appreciate what is contained in the built environment, even though the built environment may not be in line with our views.
“If this is not purposely lit with any intention, we have to understand. We hope the developer will take note of the views expressed. I don’t see the need to hurt any party.
“In our built environment, we have churches, temples and mosques. If we feel hurt, every second, every minute and every place we go to, we won’t have good feelings.
“However, all parties must take care of one another’s sensitivities. I await a report from SUK (State Secretary) and I believe the developer is aware of the viral image,” he said.
