THE state government has disbursed a total of RM1.73 million to various non-Islamic houses of worship (RIBIs) from March to May this year, says state Social Development, Welfare and Non-Religious Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim (PH-Sungai Pinang).

Answering an oral question from Wong Yuee Harng (PH-Pengkalan Kota) during the State Legislative Assembly, Lim said the funds were distributed to 43 RIBIs through the RIBI fund.

“A total of 55 applications were received, out of which 43 were approved by the committee following evaluation based on the requirements under the RIBI Trust Fund guidelines.

“This evaluation involved assessments by technical agencies regarding the status of land and buildings, as well as verification of the organisation’s registration,” Lim explained.

Lim added that the allocation is intended for repair works, maintenance, and the establishment of RIBI sites.

The allocation is limited to RIBI buildings established by devotees for prayers, religious activities, and celebrations.

Among the scope for work for repairs, maintenance, and establishment of RIBI sites are:

i) Restructuring the RIBI building

ii) Repairing ceiling and roof leaks

iii) Fixing wall cracks and tiled floors

iv) Repairing the drainage system

v) Fence repair and installation

vi) Updating wiring systems and electrical circuits

vii) Providing emergency assistance

In response to a supplementary question from Wong, Lim shared that RIBIs over 100 years old, without permits or formal recognition, will also be considered for the RIBI fund for severe repair and maintenance work.

“They will be evaluated, followed by a site visit by relevant personnel,” Lim explained.

Religious bodies must be registered under the Registrar of Societies Malaysia (ROS) to be eligible for the RIBI fund, or established under the Malaysia Government Gazette and registered in the eRIBI system.

Lim also added that RIBI land allocated by developers should undergo careful study to ensure suitability for establishing RIBIs.
