THE state government has announced an open invitation for contractors to apply for the turnkey appointment for the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mutiara Line project.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow shared this during a press conference at Komtar today. He noted that MRT Corp serves as the main contractor for the project.
According to Chow, the Federal government-backed project is divided into three main segments: the Silicon Island to Komtar line (Segment 1), the Komtar to Penang Sentral line (Segment 2), and the turnkey systems and rolling stocks.
“This tender covers the electronic system and trains for the LRT services.
“It includes the engineering, procurement, design, construction, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of the railway system for the Penang LRT Mutiara Line project,” Chow explained.
It is learned that a second notice for the tender was published in an English daily today. Chow added that there were no issues related to land acquisition for the project.
Chow also hoped that local contractors would be given the opportunities to participate in the LRT project.
Chow also shared that Segment 1, which involves civil and structural work covering the alignment from Silicon Island to Komtar, has been awarded to SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd, which will serve as the Project Delivery Partner (PDP).
Segment 2 will involve similar work, covering the alignment from Komtar (Macallum) to Penang Sentral.
Also present were Deputy Secretary Datuk Mohd Zakuan Zakaria (development) and State Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.
Zairil highlighted that all three segments of the Penang LRT Mutiara Line project need to take place concurrently for a smoother implementation.
