State govt open to options other than LRT project

THE Penang government is still looking at various options concerning the building of the proposed Komtar-Bayan Lepas Light Rail Transport (LRT) project, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

When asked by a reporter whether the state would consider having an Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) or Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system as suggested by some quarters, he said that one of the 30 conditions imposed by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) for the project was that it was for an elevated system.

“It could be an LRT or monorail,” Chow said in reply after visiting the Penang Signature Gold Fair at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre in Relau today.

Last month, Chow said the state government would be seeking funding from the Federal Government for the LRT and the Penang Island Link 1 (PIL1) projects, two components of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP).

The state government has also recently received approval from the Department of Environment (DoE) to proceed with the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project.
