State govt plans more charging points for electric motorcycles on the mainland

THE Penang government is currently in the process of adding more free electric motorcycle charging stations in Seberang Perai.

State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said this green initiative would help to promote zero-emission mobility and improve the livelihood of the people.

“But more importantly, it will also help to improve the welfare of those from the B40 community who are actively involved in the delivery sector on the mainland.

“Prior to that, on the island, the state government through collaboration with Penang Green Council (PGC) and Penang Island City Council (MBPP), successfully installed free electric motorcycle charging stations at nine different locations on the island.

“Based on the data that we get, the total number of new purchases of vehicles nationally shows that we are at an almost 50-50 split between new motorcycles and new cars.

“Hence, it is equally important for the state government to focus on the two-wheeler industry as well by adding more electric motorcycle charging stations,” Zairil said in his speech before launching the Mini Cooper electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at Vangohh Eminent Hotel in Machang Bubuk recently.

Speaking about the programme, Zairil said Auto Bavaria has chosen Vangohh Eminent Hotel as the site for its first and only Mini Cooper charging station in Penang.

“I hope the new charging station will serve the community well.

“This initiative also will undoubtedly encourage more EV charging companies to expand their reach and explore new locations.

“It not only provides the much-needed convenience but is poised to play a pivotal role in convincing consumers to choose an EV over a traditional gasoline-powered vehicle.

“Thus, the significance of this achievement cannot be overstated, and it reflects our collective commitment to embracing cleaner and greener transportation options in Penang,” added Zairil.
