THE Penang government remains committed to promoting racial harmony in the state through various policies and initiatives implemented over the years.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the establishment of a fund for the development of non-Islamic houses of worship (RIBI) as an example of these efforts.
“We also founded the Penang Harmony Corporation (Harmonico) to promote the concept of religious harmony.
“As of May this year, the Penang government has approved 43 applications under the RIBI fund, totalling RM1.73 million.
“Through these grants, we aim to assist various places of worship in their enhancement efforts.
“In short, the Penang government is committed to continuing these policies to support places of worship in the state and ensure balanced development among all communities,” Chow said in his speech at the Penang Wesak Celebration Day 2024 at the Malaysian Buddhist Association (MBA) building in Burmah Road this evening.
Chow also called for all Penangites to cooperate with the state government in promoting a harmonious and cohesive society.
“We live in a multi-racial country, and our ability to coexist harmoniously is our greatest strength.
“Since our independence, various ethnic groups in our country have coexisted peacefully, supporting one another despite occasional disruptions by a minority of extremists.
“Nevertheless, the people of our country and in our state are becoming increasingly mature in dealing with these racial issues.
“It is our hope that everyone will continue to educate the next generation, instilling the correct values to build a more harmonious society in our beloved state and country,” said Chow.
Speaking about the programme, Chow mentioned that the theme for this year’s Penang Wesak Celebration Day is ‘Living Harmoniously, Thriving Society’.
Chow noted that the theme is a principle consistently advocated by both the Unity government at the Federal level and the Penang government.
He expressed that it was a great honour to collaborate with the Malaysian Buddhist Association in organising this celebration once again.
Chow also mentioned that the state government consistently encourages non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to collaborate with the state government in hosting various events as a united effort to advance society together.
Also present were Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying, who is also the Tanjong MP, Penang Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim, state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, MBA president and organising chairman Venerable Jit Heng and Penang Wesak Celebration Day 2024 deputy chairman Venerable Kai Ling.
