THE remarkable life and service of Dr M.P.L. Yegappan, a beloved figure from Bukit Mertajam, is celebrated in a compelling new biography titled Heart of Service: The Untold Story of Dr M.P.L. Yegappan.
Authored by Human Resources Minister and Bukit Mertajam MP, Steven Sim Chee Keong, the 200-page English-language book chronicles Dr Yegappan’s tireless dedication to community service and his lasting contributions to Malaysia’s early nation-building efforts.
The biography was officially launched today by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at the Sungurambai Nagarathar Thendayuthapani Temple in Bukit Mertajam.
Sim, who began writing the book in November 2020, shared the challenges he faced in piecing together Dr Yegappan’s story.
“Heart of Service sheds light on a Penang politician during the Merdeka era.
“Telling an ‘untold story’ of a historical figure was no easy task, as records such as state assembly hansards, meeting minutes, and personal testimonies were difficult to uncover.
“Yet, I am glad to finally honour this extraordinary man who did so much for Penang and Malaysia,” Sim said during his speech.
The book portrays Dr Yegappan not just as a town doctor but as a leader who prioritised service over self-interest. His efforts transcended political divisions, leaving an indelible mark on his community and the nation.
Chow emphasised that the biography was not merely an account of one man’s life but a reflection of timeless values that remain relevant today.
“Dr Yegappan was more than a doctor; he was a beacon of unity and progress during Malaya’s formative years.
“As the first elected chairman of the Bukit Mertajam Town Council, he played a crucial role in shaping a young township.
“His partnership with Penang’s first Chief Minister, Tan Sri Wong Pow Nee, was a testament to his commitment to building a better community,” Chow said.
Chow highlighted Dr Yegappan’s choice to prioritise healing and service over personal gain, calling his story a reminder that true leadership is measured by the lives one uplifts and the trust one builds.
“Through Heart of Service, we are reminded that leadership is not about titles or accolades but the courage to act and the grace to serve,” Chow added.
The biography is described as a thoughtful tribute to Dr Yegappan’s values of humility, selflessness, and community-building.
Sim’s narrative delves into his patient-centred approach as a doctor, his ability to bridge divides, and his relentless dedication to fostering unity during Malaya’s pivotal years.
Chow concluded the launch by urging readers to draw inspiration from Dr Yegappan’s life, calling his legacy a guiding light for the future.
“To Steven Sim, thank you for giving us this gift of remembrance. Your words ensure that Dr Yegappan’s spirit of service will continue to inspire generations to come,” he said.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Penang state officials and Dr Yegappan’s family members.
Among them were state Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, state Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, state Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim, Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee, Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan Hooi Peng, and Dr Yegappan’s sons (Dr Thiyagarajan Yegappan and Vengadasalam Yegappan).
