CHIEF Minister Lim Guan Eng said Penang and China had a long history of working together, with Penang being one of the global hubs for

electronics and electrical manufacturing. The state also hosts more than 300 multinational companies. “We attracted a lot of  Chinese investors

and China has also contributed to the infrastructure of the state,” he said in his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the People’s Republic of

China consulate -general in Penang, held at St. Giles Wembley Hotel in George Town on Dec 22.

“Besides China, the other countries which have set up a consulate-general office in Penang are Japan, Indonesia and Thailand,” he added.

Also present were Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Huang Huikang and Foreign Ministry under-secretary for East Asia Division Datuk

Ganeson Sivagurunathan.

Meanwhile, Huang said the consulate-general office in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, headed by consul-general Wu Jun, would provide consular

services to not only to Penang but Kedah, Perak and Perlis as well.

“The Penang office is the third in Malaysia, with the two others being in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.

Ganeson said the office would strengthen Malaysia’s longstanding relationship with China.

“We should not be contented with what we have achieved through this relationship but work harder for bilateral benefit, ” he added.
