IT was a day full of action for some 150 teams, comprised of youth aged 23 and below, at the Esplanade today.
Six streetball courts were set up in Jalan Padang Kota Lama, in front of the Town Hall, right to the City Hall for the ❤️PENANG 3×3 Streetball Challenge 2022.
The categories contested were Boys U15, 17, 19, and 23; and Girls U18.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow thanked the Kampung Kolam Village Community Management Council (MPKK) and Youngsters Basketball Club for jointly organising the streetball challenge.
“I am very proud of the initiative taken. This event has the potential to be a yearly programme.
“Streetball, or commonly known as street basketball, is becoming more popular among our people.
“In principle, the streetball game applies the same technique as the usual basketball game. However, they are both different in terms of rules and playing style,” he said in his speech today.
Chow said that losing or winning is part of the game.
“I hope that all the players will show great fighting spirit and enjoy this valuable experience.
“It is hoped that through this platform, Penang will be able to unearth more new young talents and at the same time produce a more active and healthy society in terms of physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual aspects,” he added.
The VIPs then took part in the shooting session, which saw Chow score in his first attempt after having three free throw practices.
Two winners took home an Apple iPhone 13 and a 65in LED television respectively after their lucky numbers were drawn during the lucky draw.
Also present were Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi, Penang Island City Council councillors, Youngsters Basketball Club vice-chairman Dr Cheah Chong Soo, and Kampung Kolam MPKK chairman Quah Peng Eow.
