CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow has called for the implementation of stricter enforcement measures concerning gas pipeline safety, particularly in industrial zones across the state.

His remarks come in response to the devastating incident in Putra Heights, Selangor, where a Petronas gas pipeline leak resulted in a massive explosion and fire.

The explosion, which occurred on the morning of the second day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, saw flames soaring as high as 30 meters, leaving hundreds of people injured in the surrounding area.

Chow emphasised the need for proactive safety measures, especially in areas with dense gas pipeline infrastructure.

He noted that the state Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H’ng Mooi Lye, had instructed the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) to intensify monitoring of gas pipelines on the mainland, where gas supplies are more concentrated than on the island.

“Currently, warning signs are posted in areas with active gas pipelines, serving as a reminder to the public about the potential dangers of such incidents.

However, given the severity of the recent event, we recognise the urgent need for more robust enforcement,” Chow said during the Jawi state constituency Hari Raya Open House on the mainland today.

He assured the public that the safety of the people remains the state’s highest priority and will never be compromised.

The state government, he added, is committed to working closely with MBSP and other relevant authorities to ensure that such tragic events do not occur again.
