AS the global trade landscape shifts, Malaysia must continue to cleverly position itself as an indispensable force in the semiconductor and technology sectors.

Investment, Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Liew Chin Tong said the current scenario sets the perfect stage for local, homegrown companies, to collectively play a key role in putting the country’s economy at the global front.

“With rising regional supply chain fragmentation and geopolitical tensions leading to conflicting economic blocs, Malaysia must carve out its unique role in the evolving global economy.

“One of the key strategies for Malaysia is moving beyond traditional vertical integration and embracing a more horizontal approach, fostering deeper global connectivity across industries.

“While Malaysia is already a major player in semiconductor manufacturing, producing 30% of the world’s automotive chips, the nation must next aim to expand its technological reach into defence, agriculture, and medical devices.

“Rather than striving to become a singular global champion, Malaysia must seek to fortify its position as a crucial enabler in the global supply chain, the ‘indispensable needle’ in the fabric of international trade.

“This means creating horizontal linkages that encourage domestic innovation, ensuring that Malaysia is not just a technology user but a technology creator,” Liew said in his speech after launching the ‘United Local Synergy Programme’ at Greatech Integration (M) Sdn Bhd in Batu Kawan today.

By fostering local synergies, Liew stressed that Malaysia was laying the groundwork for a self-sustaining tech ecosystem that complements multinational corporations (MNCs) while prioritising homegrown advancements.

He said the approach aligns with the ‘Team Malaysia’ concept, a strategy that encourages national collaboration and positions the country as a key player in global semiconductor and technology partnerships.

“The time has come for us to transition from ‘Made in Malaysia’ to ‘Made by Malaysians’.

“Recognising its strength in the semiconductor industry, Malaysia aims to deepen collaboration with international powerhouses while reinforcing its domestic capabilities.

“By developing a structured semiconductor collaboration framework, Malaysia can leverage its expertise within MNCs and forge trilateral relationships to enhance global competitiveness,” he added.

The programme will see seven industrial leaders form a strategic alliance to strengthen the local supply chain, drive innovation, and elevate Malaysia’s position in the global economy.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow was present to witness the launching, and the seven companies are Greatech Mechatronics Sdn Bhd, Aurelius Technologies, Coraza Systems Sdn Bhd, Berjayapak Sdh Bhd, Swift Bridge Technologies, Prodelcon Sdn Bhd, and EngTek.

Chow, in his speech, applauded the programme and said it was a bold step towards enhancing the local supply chain, fostering industry cooperation, and driving sustainable growth.

Chow says he is optimistic with the collective effort by the industrial leaders to upscale the nation’s economy in the global front.

“This initiative signals a shift in Malaysia’s economic strategy, from being a participant in global supply chains to actively shaping the future of technology.

“With a strong foundation in semiconductors and a commitment to horizontal integration, Malaysia is well on its way to securing its place as a vital hub in the international tech ecosystem.

“It is timely that Penang continues to adapt, innovate and build a resilient ecosystem to ensure we stay relevant and globally competitive despite the trade shifts, supply chain disruptions, and evolving industry demand,” Chow said in his speech.

He was optimistic that the initiative would be vital in helping local companies move up the value chain, expand global markets, and strengthen their technological capabilities.

Chow has been actively advocating for local companies to be part of the global supply chain, frequently emphasising their pivotal role in boosting the nation’s economic development.

The leaders of all the seven companies had earlier inked a document of collaboration to mark the start of the new partnership.

Also present earlier was InvestPenang chief executive officer Datuk Loo Lee Lian.
