THE Sungai Nibong express bus terminal will be upgraded for better accessibility.
Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Lee Wei Seang said works to upgrade the bus terminal would be carried out soon for the convenience of bus passengers.
“The works will include the establishment of ticket machines, building escalators, expansion of the second floor, better parking spaces and a centralised ticketing system.
“We expect works for the makeover to be completed within this year,” he said when contacted today.
Lee said the upgrading works would look into the needs of the disabled as well.
“The upgrading plan will see more convenience stores on the second floor. The washrooms and the existing waiting area will be refurbished too,” Lee said, adding that a contractor has been appointed for the project.
Once the bus terminal is upgraded, Lee pointed out that the premises would be brightened up.
In a brief interview at the Sungai Nibong bus terminal, G. Dhanajeyam, 74, said he hoped the council could improve the cleanliness at the premises.
“Escalators must be added while authorities should also look into a more conducive and cleaner environment at the terminal as Penang is one of the top tourism destinations.
“Many unnecessary fences have been built at the terminal and I hope the authorities can look into that,” he said.
Express bus ticket seller, Suhaimi Mohd Nasir, 32, said he hoped more boarding stations would be built.
“The authorities should look into the needs of the disabled to ensure better accessibility for them,” he said.
