THE physical works of the Sungai Pinang flood mitigation project (Phase One) are scheduled to begin in January next year, state Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said.

“The Phase One involves two rivers, namely, Sungai Pinang and Sungai Jelutong; and the physical works comprised Sungai Pinang river improvement, river corridor improvement as well as beautifying and upgrading of pedestrian bridge.

“It will take about four years to complete Phase One,” Jagdeep said.

He said the Sungai Pinang flood mitigation project also include transition between Sungai Air Itam and Sungai Air Terjun, Sungai Jelutong flood wall, new Jelutong diversion at Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim and Jalan Ahmad Nor, and other mechanical and electrical associated works.

The entire project costs RM600 million.

Jagdeep says it is important to ensure physical works commence as soon as possible for the Sungai Pinang RTB project.

“The Federal Government has, so far, approved RM150 million (out of the RM600 million) under the first rolling plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan for the year 2021.

“We are working closely with the state Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) to ensure that physical works start as soon as possible.

“A consultant has been appointed to conduct soil investigation for the project after four consultants were shortlisted,” he said
