IT’S time of the year again.

Talented skimboarders from Malaysia and overseas are expected to converge on the Mercure Penang Beach Hotel in Tanjung Bungah on Sept 14 and Sept 15 for the Penang 11th International Skimboarding Competition 2019.

The annual event, which was inaugurated in 2007, is organised by Penang Skimboarding Association (PSA) in collaboration with Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

PSA president Kee Jet Shon is encouraging interested participants to come forward and register themselves at the hotel on Sept 13, starting from 4pm.

He said the event would start at 9am on Sept 14.

He said the participants’ registration would be through walk-in as he targeted 120 skimboarders to take part.

“Those from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan are set to join in as well.

“This water sport activity is one of the events to build an active and healthier community in the state.

“It is definitely a way to promote tourism in the state as well,” he told a press conference at the Mercure Penang Beach Hotel in Tanjung Bungah today.

Also present were Seri Delima assemblyman Syerleena Abd Rashid, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Community Services Department director Rashidah Jalaludin and the association’s committee member Fadzly Hamizan.

Syerleena, who appeared on behalf of Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Zairil Khir Johari, said the event was another avenue of promoting the state’s sports tourism aside from medical tourism.

Syerleena speaks on her view on sports tourism.

She said this could also bring the state to a greater heights in terms of sports promotion.

“I hope to see female participants joining the event in the next edition,” she said, adding that the competition is now open to males only due to lack of women’s entries.

The enntry fee is RM40 per person.
