THE Penang government is steadfast in its commitment to mitigating the risk and impact of flash floods in the flood-prone areas in Teluk Bahang.
Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the state government through the state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) has consistently carried out regular river maintenance every year and minor repair works using state allocations.
“This is our short-term plan to tackle flash flood problems in Teluk Bahang, especially in the low-lying areas.
“For the long-term plan, the state government will carry out the Teluk Bahang flood mitigation project to minimise the flood woes in Teluk Bahang. This project is currently in the design stage.
“The Penang government also will continue to work closely with Penang Island City Council (MBPP), state Public Works Department (JKR), state DID and Southwest District and Land Office to ensure drainage systems in the village areas in Teluk Bahang are not clogged with rubbish.
“Clogged drainage systems can lead to flash floods. Thus, I urge everyone to refrain from disposing of rubbish into the drains and rivers as well,” Zairil (PH-Tanjong Bunga) replied to an oral question by Muhamad Kasim (PN-Teluk Bahang) during the Penang Legislative Assembly session today.
Muhamad Kasim had wanted to know the short and long-term plans by the state government to solve flood woes in Teluk Bahang.
