Tamil Education Conference in Penang this November

IN a bid to revive Tamil education in Malaysia, the office of Deputy Chief Minister II Prof. Dr P. Ramasamy and the Society for Advancement of Tamil (PSAT) will be organising the National Conference on Tamil Education in Malaysia in November this year.

“This is not an ordinary conference as it would play a pivotal role in coming up with a resolution to be presented to the Minister of Education Dr. Maszlee Malik regarding Tamil education in Malaysia.

“We have invited the minister himself to the conference as well as to officiate it. This conference would bring about policy implications.

“I urge people from all layers of society such as teachers, school principals, politicians, lecturers, university students, government personnel, NGOs, Institution of Teacher Education Malaysia (IPGM) representatives and so on to come and take part in this conference,” Ramasamy said during a press conference today.

Wawasan Open University Dean of the School of Education, Languages and Communications Faculty Dr R. Santhiram said that this conference is timely as Tamil education in Malaysia needs to be revamped.

“This conference is crucial as it will help us to reexamine the status of Tamil education and to give recommendations or suggestions to it within the national framework.

“Basically, those suggestions are to improve Tamil education in Malaysia.

“For instance, there is primary level for (Tamil education) and there’s also the tertiary level but in between, there are no institutions offering secondary level.

“So, we need to re-align the whole system of Tamil education and teach things that are relevant in today’s world,” noted Santhiram.
