TCM way to strengthen immune system

TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine (TCM), which plays a huge role in boosting a person’s immune system and treating some ailments, is now gaining traction in Penang.

A total of 26 Chinese medical halls and designated clinics in Penang are now working together to promote a kind of herbal tea, called ‘General Health Care Herbal Tea’, to the people.

With the current raging pandemic and recent heatwave, there are practitioners who have encouraged the public to give more attention to the importance of building a healthy immune system.

The Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Malaysia Northern Region Students and Alumni Association president Dr Tan Pin Tin said a total of 10,000 leaflets of the ‘General Health Care Herbal Tea’ have been distributed to all service centres in the state.

“Those who are interested to redeem a packet of the herbs can do so by getting the leaflets at their respective service centres,” Dr Tan briefed Buletin Mutiara when she was interviewed recently.

“After getting the leaflets, they can proceed to the designated medical halls as stated to obtain the packet of herbs. It’s all free!

“The initiative, which started from Feb 1 till March 31, is aimed at relieving the symptoms of illnesses and building a stronger immune system.

“We could extend the duration as well if we continue to receive overwhelming feedback.”

Generally, Dr Tan, who is also a Chinese medical doctor specialising in gynaecology, explained that a packet of herbs is sold at between RM6 and RM8.

The ingredients comprise astragalus, ledebouriella root, atractylodes macrocephala, herba eupatorii, honeysuckle flower, guan zhong and ripe tangerine rind.

She said the brewing process could be obtained from the leaflets.

Dr Tan also extended her gratitude to those who have been supporting the initiative.

“I would like to thank the state Environment and Welfare Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh for supporting us all this while.

“Without him (Phee), all this effort will not materialise. Also, I would like to thank the non-government organisations for promoting the programme,” she said.
